Why we built this
When Rachael's son Theo was born prematurely, nobody handed her a list of what to pack. She learned by trial and error, by asking nurses, and by spending long days in the NICU wishing she had brought the right things. This checklist exists so that no other parent has to figure it out alone. Every item on this list was chosen because it genuinely helps during a NICU stay, not because it fills a page.
How it works
Work through each category and mark items as packed, need to get, or not needed. The dashboard at the top tracks your progress and lets you know when the essentials are covered. You can filter the list to see only what you still need, and when you are done you can share your list directly with a partner, grandparent, or friend who wants to help. If you are packing for someone else, switch to partner mode and the list will adjust for you.
Who is this for?
This checklist is for any parent preparing for a NICU stay, whether you have days to plan or just minutes. It is also for the partners, grandparents, and friends who want to do something practical to help. If someone you know has a baby in neonatal care and you are not sure how to support them, packing their hospital bag is one of the most useful things you can do. Share this page with them.
What makes NICU packing different
A NICU hospital bag is not the same as a standard maternity bag. Premature babies need clothing that works around wires and monitors. Parents need supplies for long, unpredictable days spent beside an incubator. Toiletries need to be unscented because premature babies are sensitive to smells. This checklist was designed specifically for neonatal care, not adapted from a generic hospital bag list.
More from Simply Preemie
Simply Preemie is a UK-based shop specialising in premature baby clothing designed for babies in neonatal care. Every product is made with NICU life in mind, from front-opening vests for easy access to wires, to sleepsuits sized by weight for the tiniest babies. Read Theo's story to learn how Rachael's own NICU experience inspired everything we do. You can also explore our NICU Quote Generator, our NICU Terminology Guide, and our full range of premature baby clothes.
Every NICU is different. Some units provide certain items like nappies and cotton wool, while others ask parents to bring their own. We recommend checking with your neonatal unit before your first visit to find out what they supply and what they prefer you to bring. This checklist is a guide based on real experience, not medical advice.
